On this chapter we
get a closer look to Bruno and Gretel’s relationship. Bruno had already
mentioned how he considered his sister a “hopeless case” and he has heard his
parents refer to her as “trouble from day one”. He also mentions how Gretel’s
friends or the monsters as he called them always bothered him because of his
small size in comparison too other kids of the same age as Bruno. Later on I
could relate to an action the main character did, because when he went to his
older sister room Bruno started talking about how much he dislikes the new living
arrangements; and I do the same thing as Bruno, that when I don’t like someone
or a situation I start talking about it with several people so they can share
my same opinion or idea. Finally there was something I didn’t quite understand
and is that at some point Bruno mentions how he doesn’t like the kids that live
near the new house, to what Gretel responds surprise since she didn’t knew
there were other kids around. That’s when Bruno shows her something from the
little window and her sister ends up astonished and sharing the same feeling as
Bruno. But I guess that as I keep reading, my doubts would be solved.

Chapter 2
Once Bruno arrives
to his new house, he is extremely disappointed because his new residence is the
opposite from his beloved home in Berlin. The new house is the only building in
a big territory and is been describe to be an empty, desolate place, and as the
loneliest place in the world with only three stories instead of five. Also the
bedrooms are being described to be all together in the top floor, the servants
sleeping in the basement, the ground floor being where the kitchen, dining
room, and Bruno’s father office are located. I could see how upset and
concerned Bruno was about their new living arrangements, since he dare to
challenge her mom by telling her is a bad idea, and in those times kids where
really respectful and even afraid of their parents. I can relate to the way
Bruno was feeling, because when I change schools I also was really sad for
having to leave my school and my friends behind and somehow disappointed to
what came instead. And I felt just like Bruno’s mother told him, that sometimes
we don’t have the luxury of thinking, there are always some people that make all
the decisions for us. Also my mother was always telling me to, “make the best
of a bad situation”, just like Bruno’s mother, so to take advantage of this new
experience.
Chapter 1
On chapter 1, we are
introduced to five main characters. Bruno who is the main character and a 9
years-old kid who lives in a big house in Berlin, her older sister Gretel who
has 12 years-old and to whom he refers as a "Hopeless Case", his
mother who is a very righteous women that is very devoted to her husband and
finally Bruno's and Gretel's father, who is a military with a very high rank,
since the Fuhrer has been to his house and in those times that never happened
unless you were really important. When Bruno talks about her sister, he calls
her a "Hopeless Case", and I could totally relate to him. Since I
also have an older sister that I'm always bothering saying that she is a lost
case for fashion, because she dresses like a 50 year-old lady and because of
the things she enjoys, like being the fan number 1 of Harry Potter and actually
believing there might be a magic world and we are just muggles. In my
opinion, chapter 1 was a very good introduction to the characters personality
and to what was happening during that time. Also it was very good described
since by reading you could figure out the time the book was occurring,
that was during the Holocaust and when Hitler was in control of Germany. So
in conclusion the first chapter made me happy and wanting to read more to know
what would happen next, so it kept me interested.
