Bruno curious as always asks Maria how could Pavel be a
doctor and be serving food to them; to what Maria answered he was once a doctor
“in another life”, meaning before he was taken by the Nazis and force to work
in Out-With. Every afternoon Bruno goes on a long walk to the fence and spends time
talking with Shmuel. This time Bruno asked him what he wanted to be when he
grows older, to what he answer a zookeeper; and when Shmuel asked Bruno, he
announced he wanted to be a soldier jut like his father. Bruno’s answer made
Shmuel feel uncomfortable and mention how they weren’t any good soldiers, which
started an argument. Bruno doesn’t realize this, but Shmuel dislike is due to
them taking away her mother, and taking him into this horrible place, called a
concentration camp. Finally Bruno left and went to dinner with his family, and
to his surprise Lieutenant Kotler join them, which make an awkward dinner when
Pavel stumble and the wine fall into Kurts lap. That night Bruno mentions a
quote that I didn’t personally liked, “if that was the kind of thing that went
on at Out-With then he’d better not disagree with anyone any more about
anything; in fact he would do well to keep his mouth shut and cause no chaos at
all”. This quote sounds very selfish from Bruno’s part since he is giving up his
ideals on defending someone who is being abused by a higher authority, or stop
being so curious and asking many inappropriate questions.
